WJEC A2 Media Studies MS4: Approaching Television as an Industry

Remember: 3 x 3 = 9 (3 Industries : 3 Texts from each industry = 9 texts) That's 9 texts that you will need to study in depth.

For each industry, three main texts should provide the focus for your study.

At least two of the chosen texts must be contemporary and one must be British.

Use the mind map below to research your texts in detail

TV Industry - Lost Case Study

Video Game Industry

This video playlist from YouTube shows the history of Rockstar games, focusing primarily on their development of the Grand Theft Auto series. Episode 3 begins to focus more on promotion in dealing with “GTA: Vice City” and the horrifically violent “Manhunt”.

Red Dead Redemptive Case Study

This Prezi gives plenty of detail about the horizontal and vertical integration of Rockstar Games (itself a subsidiary of Take Two Interactive), the company which started life in Scotland producing the first Grand Theft Auto game. It also give a comprehensive outline of the marketing strategy around the promotion of the 2010 hit Red Dead Redemption, a product of the Rockstar San Diego branch of the company.

The institutional stuff is at the start. Slide 65 onwards gives a good outline of Rockstar’s brand identity. The detailed marketing stuff begins around slide 139.
Full credit to Dave Harrison for making and sharing the original version of this Prezi. It’s pretty incredible.
